For all of us the International Feature Conference has been a friend, an old friend or a new friend, but in spite of its critical roughness a reliable friend and deeply helpful.
The inner formula of the IFC, this cross-border collaboration plus personal friendship, this professional honesty about each other's work plus the common bond, this formula proved to be so strong, that 2004, thirty conferences have been staged, thirty conferences in thirty years - almost a pathetic phenomenon and a landmark in the history of the media.
And so it is time to honour our friend, the conference, to give it something back of all this it has given to each of us.
Secondly, the Prix Europa wants to pay tribute to the IFC and will call the world of features together on Wednesday 20 October in Berlin. On this very day, all of us could meet again. And all of us includes the veterans of the early conferences as well as the fresh start-ups, who are becoming the conference now. Let us face it, 2004 is our chance to meet in entirety, all of us, beyond age and experience. This chance might never occur again.
This meeting at this year's Prix Europa (16 - 23 October) seems to be a lucky connection, because it offers two reasons for the trip to Berlin. Not only to come for the
"Night of the IFC" but to join a competition of Europe's best production in TV, Radio and Internet.
Of course I am aware that it will not be easy for many of us to make this "Sentimental Journey" possible. But please keep in mind, that apart from celebrating three decades of professional friendship the "Night of the IFC" will send an essential signal across borders and media about the strength of radio and its imaginative work.
