Press Release: 34th International Feature Conference

posted 10 Jun 08

The Bulgarian National Radio and its Hristo Botev channel are hosting the 34th International Feature Conference of the European Broadcasting Union. The event takes place in Varna on June 14- 19, 2008.  Ninety radio specialists from forty-one organizations from European countries, as well as South Africa, Canada and Australia participate in the forum.

The conference gathers radio specialists from around the world to review, analyze and discuss selected radio features, which represent current trends in the genre. The discussions are marked by collegial respect yet constructive critique, which pushes radio feature making to new creative directions. Thus, the International Feature Conference is a highly anticipated annual event, where radio feature makers come to set their professional clocks, that is to check the work of others, to spot the features, which put a finger on the hot spots of the year, as well as to distinguish and admire those special documentaries that stun the listener with “radio” brilliance, artistic nature, political courage or sharp social commentary.

Such distinction and admiration receive the twenty-four especially selected radio features, which the conference presents this year at Varna. From the documentary about a homeless man in love coming from Croatia, to the child’s memories of a stork who spurs dreams from Algeria, to the journey of  a wedding dress floating down a river in Canada, these are radio programs which inspire, excite and amuse.

In the era of new communication technologies, the radio feature has artistic and technological characteristics that make it especially suitable for this new media environment. We no longer only listen to live radio broadcasts; we can now download and order radio programs to listen at our leisure. Radio features are among the most popular media products available via new communication technologies. Therefore, the genre attracts radio specialists and ordinary listeners alike.

The Bulgarian National Radio and the Hristo Botev channel are honored to host the 34th International Feature Conference of the European Broadcasting Union
